The Year of our Lord, Two Thousand and Fourteen

2014 was, quite simply, a shit year.
It was one that had me dredging my soul for reserves of will I never thought I had. I learned about the strength of some people, became perplexed by the weaknesses in others, and found myself questioning just what was real in this world.
Then there was the job, the fruitless pitches outside of that to get more work and money, and, always, family: three girls under five and a sleep-deprived partner.
One constant, as always, was music: guiding, soothing and inspiring me; keeping the spirit alive. Here are 12 songs, most with a melancholy bent (some released within the year, some resurrected oldies, and some introduced through a work colleague whose admirable goal in life, it seems, is to awaken others to worthwhile music), that helped me along.

After the Crack Up Augie March
Myth Beach House
New Grass Talk Talk
I was a Prisoner in Your Skull Swans
Hazey Jane II Nick Drake
Second Chances Gregory Alan Isakov
Pools Glass Animals
Survival Expert (acoustic) Something for Kate
Tupelo Honey Van Morrison
